A wave of concern has been raised by Ndola Archbishop Dr Benjamin Phiri, who has cautioned church members against bringing “club-style” dance moves into places of worship.
While dancing in church is widely accepted as a joyful way of praising God, the Archbishop says some believers are now crossing the line — turning sacred spaces into what looks more like entertainment zones.
Speaking during a pastoral visit to Holy Trinity Parish in Ndola, the Archbishop stressed that certain dance styles, especially those commonly seen in secular environments, can easily distract others from focusing on worship.
According to reports from Radio Ichengelo, Dr Phiri emphasized that church services — particularly the Mass — should remain respectful and orderly at all times.
“We must be careful not to adopt dances from secular settings, as they can shift attention away from the true purpose of worship,” he said.
He acknowledged that expressing joy through movement is part of Christian celebration, but made it clear that such expressions must stay within the boundaries of church teachings and liturgical practice.
The Archbishop further warned that overly suggestive or exaggerated dance moves can make it difficult for other congregants to concentrate, ultimately disrupting the spiritual atmosphere.
In his message, he reminded the faithful that the church is a sacred place — not a stage for entertainment.
Dr Phiri has since urged Christians to maintain discipline, respect, and reverence during services, ensuring that all actions reflect the core values of the Church.
